1950年世界动物保护联合会（World Federation for the Protection of Animals，WFPA）成立。1959年，国际防止虐待动物协会（International Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals，ISPA）成立。1981年，WFPA与ISPA合并成为WSPA – 世界动物保护协会（World Society for the Protection of Animals）。2014年，英文名称修改为：World Animal Protection。
